To begin with, in India the two most prestigious exams for entering into MBBS colleges are-NEET-UG and AIIMS-UG.
1)NEET-UG : NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and is conducted by CBSE ,once every year. NEET replaced AIPMT in this year,2016.It is slated to act as a single entrance exam for all government medical colleges(except AIIMS and JIPMER) and also all private medical colleges in India.Although it won't be happening this year due to the ordinance brought by the Government of India.
The NEET exam gives admission to MBBS mainly through two routes-
i)All India 15% quota- This quota is accessible to all students of India belonging to states who have participated in this All India Scheme.
Of the 29 states in India, only J&K,Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have opted out of this scheme since its inception.Still, a student from these states can be eligible for All India 15% quota by giving a Self declaration(More details available in NEET prospectus on aipmt.nic.in .Whereas, students in the states participating in this scheme can seek admission to 15% of all MBBS seats in various states of India by giving the NEET exam.
ii)State quota with NEET- Some states have chosen to fill their 85% state quota also through the NEET merit list.In this case, CBSE forwards a separate state-wise rank list of students to each state. Also, some separate colleges also take students via NEET. Here's the list from aipmt.nic.in
1. Haryana
2. Himachal Pradesh
3. Madhya Pradesh
4. Andaman & Nicobar
5. Arunachal Pradesh
6. Manipur
7. Meghalaya
8. Odisha
9. Rajasthan
10. Chandigarh (UT)
11. University of Delhi
12. Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune
13. Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (UP)
14. Hamdard University, New Delhi
I think this much detail is sufficient for beginning and for all the details please read the NEET prospectus at aipmt.nic.in.
2)AIIMS-UG : This exam gives entrance to the most sought medicla college in India,AIIMS Delhi, and the 6 new AIIMS at Bhopal,Jodhpur,Bhubaneshwar,Rishikesh,Raipur and Patna.
This exam is conducted by AIIMS Delhi itself. There are a total of 672 seat for MBBS in all the AIIMS,with 72 seats at AIIMS Delhi and 100 each at the six new AIIMS.
Any student of India can give this exam provided he/she is eligible according to the rules given in AIIMS MBBS prospectus.Since seats are way less than NEET,the competition to get in here is quite tough and cut-throat.Also this test has become online from 2015 and is conducted in two shifts on the same day.
Other exams
3)State PMTs- In states not participating in NEET for 85% state quota, the states conduct their own exams, according to their own syllabi .These are Maharashtra CET, Gujarat CET, Karnataka CET, UP CPMT etc.I probably won't be able to say much about the details of any of these since I belong to Rajasthan where 85% seats are also filled through NEET.
4)JIPMER-UG : The Jawarhal Institute for Postgraduate Medicine Education and Research, also conducts its own exam for MBBS seats of its two campuses at Puducherry and Karaikal. For more details refer to jipmer.edu.in
To end with, I have given you a fair idea about these exams but I strongly recommend you to read the individual prospectus of each exam so as to get a crystal clear idea of the exam and please remove all the false myths and claims you hear from other students about these exams, before beginning your preparation. For example-Some students of my class were told that board marks were added to make the merit list in NEET,similar to JEE-Main,but it was never so.Thus, please beware of myths like these.
My next post would be highlighting the syllabus and preparation methods for these exams.
Edit:Do post your queries in comments section.I will try my best to answer them.
