Books and Study Material- Biology

Greetings Readers
Now that NEET-2 is done, its your own chance next or next to next year to ace the exams of NEET and AIIMS. For that you must have got or will need books and study materials to prepare for the topics.Today I will be telling you about the books I followed and what one should follow while preparing for NEET Biology.
I will be dividing all students into 3 categeries- Beginner,Semi-pro and Pros.
  • Beginners-Those who have just began NEET/AIIMS preparation and don't have much clue about the pattern and syllabus of NEET/AIIMS
  • Semi-pro -Those who have already began their preparation and have undergone 2-3 months of coaching and studying and are now aware of the pattern and syllabus of NEET/AIIMS. Although they maybe still in confusion of topics and chapters.
  • Pro - These are the people who have already mastered NCERT and coaching study materials and are looking for more to maybe study for Olympiads like NSEB .
Core books -These must be used by beginners,semi-pros and pros alike.

  • NCERT Biology Class 11&12

NEET and AIIMS both use NCERT as their core syllabus, except on few 7-8 questions that go out of syllabus.Mostly 80-90% questions in these exams are directly from NCERT Biology.Diagrams and figures also maybe directly asked from these books.
"NCERT to aapko puri karni hi paregi agar NEET/AIIMS me success chahiye to.Koi bahana nahi chalega".
  • Dr.Ali's Objective Biology for all PMTs(Sasha Publications)

These two books are quite good when it comes to master NCERT Biology. If you study and then check your progress by doing its questions, you will get a right benchmark of which topics you are strong in and which ones you are weak in.Also it has some out of NCERT questions too which may help in answering out of NCERT questions in NEET. I myself used them throughout my preparation and was luckily recommended these two by my coaching teacher. This is by far the most concise, non question repeating, unique question having book for NCERT Biology that I have seen in 2 years of my preparation.

Auxiliary books and study material - These can be used once you are a semi-pro and need to become a pro.Use only one or at the most two of these.Don't buy all three.
1. Aakash Institute NEET/AIIMS(Medical) DLP Biology Books - These are almost 9-10 books(as I have seen) having all chapters of NCERT Biology discussed in more detail with core lines used of NCERT. With today's pattern of 'NCERT+' syllabus of NEET/AIIMS these provide a good option for study materials that you need to study aside from NCERT. These also contain questions that you need to practice for NEET/AIIMS(Recommended for Non-Allenites or Aakash enrolled students.)
2.Allen Biology DLP books- If you are already enrolled in Allen Career Institute, stick to your own sheets and your teacher notes rather than enrolling for other DLP(for Biology),as they are more than enough for NEET/AIIMS if you study them meticulously. By reading other DLPs, you may get confused and end up wasting time. Also,if not an Allenite, Aakash and Allen DLPs are almost equivalent so it's a good option too.
3.Resonance Biology DLP Modules - Resonance being a new institute in Biology has its study material in developing phase.Although I can tell you the teachers currently designing these are way good and experienced and they may surpass Aakash or atleast Allen soon in quality of content. Those enrolled in Resonance, should at least do the questions given at the back in Exercises section. These are the most updated ones till date.Theory may be done by teacher notes or Allen/Aakash books as any of the topics in these are not given in a good way(till 2014,2015 ones) for theory. Not recommended over Allen/Aakash as of 2016.
(I myself have used only these DLP books so can only tell about them not others. Also if you are only looking for study material and not classroom course of the above ones, please buy only Biology study material of Aakash or Allen since for Physics and Chemistry Resonance ones are way better and updated).

Books for Olympiads - These are recommended only for pros or semi-pros who are almost becoming pros with NCERT and coaching materials syllabus.
1.Campbell Biology(by Jane Reece) - This is actually a graduate level biology book although not very complex in language and topics are same as NCERT.
This is perhaps the most easy to read Biology book as it explains every thing in the most easiest words possible. With colorful diagrams and illustrations, it makes Biology a fun to read subject. Many questions come directly from it in NSEB Olympiad. Also 2-3 over the level questions(like glyphosate resistance in "AIPMT 2015 3 May") may come from here in NEET/AIIMS.(Please do not purchase this book physically as this one is quite costly(5000-25000).Rather download a PDF  copy online to read on your computer or may be get a black-white printout of individual chapters whenever you need)

2. Arihant INBO Resource book by Dr. RK Manglik -

This one is the book you may need to practice previous year Biology Olympiad questions to get the best idea of what topics to read specifically for Olympiads. There aren't any other books as far as I have seen specifically for NSEB/INBO Biology questions.
Here comes the end to this list.I and some of my classmates of my batch at Resonance did only these few books of Biology in 2 years to ace NEET,AIIMS and Olympiads. Two people from our batch qualified for INBO(2nd stage of Olympiads) in 2015.
P.S. I didn't!
You may be thinking that I have XYZ book different from the above mentioned ones. What should I do?...........................Answer-No problem. You may try the above ones and if they don't suit you,you may use your own ones that your teacher has recommended too.
Actually the main thing behind this post is informing students that they should focus on few selected, well recommended books rather than again and again changing them and ending up with a pile of books and no knowledge still. Also don't pay heed to X student or Y Bhaiya and Z Didi for book recommendations unless they have themselves completely studied from that book and are benefiting from it.I have seen many people get "out of course" and quite thick books which they never studied again after few days or weeks of purchasing them.Simply because these didn't help for NEET/AIIMS.
Please stick to your coaching teacher(not school teacher) and ex-NEET/AIIMS high rankers only for book recommendations.Once you have chosen few books, stick to them for a good period and many coaching tests until you feel that's not helping.Do learn patiently and steadily as only what you have extracted from these books will help you finally, not having these books themselves.
Till next time
Bye!
Edit:Do post your queries in comments section.I will try my best to answer them.

  1. I have been using Trueman's Objective Biology and found the content to be too vast. Can you please recommend if I should continue with it or go for Dr.Ali?.I am in Class 12th right now.

  2. 80-85 questions of NEET come directly from NCERT and only few are from out of NCERT,so rather than continuing Trueman's,you can do NCERT along with coaching material and notes.Even AIIMS exam has almost all questions directly from NCERT.Do Dr. Ali to make you NCERT concepts strong, definitely.

  4. See your problem is a genuine one and I myself had encountered it in my initial stages of NEET preparation.First thing, don't get swayed away by what other people read/study.I have seen people having learnt Trueman and Pradeep word to word by heart but failing to get a MBBS seat.
Coming to NCERT, it definitely feels that NCERT fails to expand on many topics which come in slight more detail in NEET/AIIMS. Paragraphs are given where very lengthy topics are wrapped up into one para and finished. You definitely can't "understand" a never seen topic directly from NCERT. Solution?.............The important thing is how much you understand of a topic given in NCERT and that can be increased only when a good teacher teaches you and helps you expand upon these NCERT concepts, and at the same time you listen to him/her with good attention.Class notes are the best option for learning topics for the first time, then you can 'keep covering' NCERT along with it.Also,if you think that you still don't understand concepts even after listening lectures with the utmost concentration,I suggest you to read Campbell-Reece Biology book, available on internet as PDF file(DON'T BUY PHYSICAL COPY as it will cost 10-15 thousand rupees!).Although it is a graduate level book, the syllabus is same and it teaches even the most difficult to understand concepts in the simplest words and colorful illustrations. It helped me a lot during the past 2 years of my preparation.

    1. Take either 9th edition or latest one is 10th edition.I used 9th edition as I got a PDF copy of it from the web.Print versions are expensive thats why used PDFs.The authors were originally Neil Campbell and Jane Reece, but over the years new co-authors have joined and contributed to the book.
