Books and Study Material - Chemistry

Greetings Readers

It appears as if you all are liking the previous posts and that has encouraged me to continue writing posts to help you out with NEET/AIIMS exams.Today I will be telling you about the books about the books of Bio-students "2nd or even 1st favorite subject-Chemistry".Again all the students are divided into 3 categories - Beginner,Semi-pro and Pros.

• Beginners-Those who have just began NEET/AIIMS preparation and don't have much clue about the pattern and syllabus of NEET/AIIMS
• Semi-pro -Those who have already began their preparation and have undergone 2-3 months of coaching and studying and are now aware of the pattern and syllabus of NEET/AIIMS. Although they maybe still in confusion of topics and chapters.
• Pro - These are the people who have already mastered NCERT and coaching study materials and are looking for more to maybe study for Olympiads like NSEC and other exams like KVPY.

Core books - Recommended for beginners,semi-pros and pros alike.

• NCERT  Chemistry Class 11&12

• Many students think that they need to do high level books of JEE type and NCERTs are "sarkari" ones and useless but the case is actually "the opposite".Actually NCERTs are great books on theory and even questions,its just that the arrangement and the depth of topics make them only a bit inconvenient.For beginners,you must start from NCERT and then move to coaching materials(they are also VERY important for NEET/AIIMS Chemistry).You should once or twice study theory and then solve questions from NCERT which will make you get a firm grip at the basics.Plus,for Inorganic Chemistry NCERT is best alone itself.Only other thing you would be needing in Inorganic Chem is DLP/Coaching booklets for question practice.

• A good NEET/AIIMS DLP or Booklet package from a reputed coaching institute - Here comes the difference between Bio and Phy/Chem in study materials.In Bio its possible to score 75-80% with only NCERT,but here to even reach 120-140 out of 180 you need coaching materials.Many formulas,theories and a good question bank are missing from NCERT Chem books so you definitely need something extra.

I myself have used Resonance, Aakash DLP and Allen DLP and can tell that Resonance one is the best for NEET/AIIMS Chemistry as they contain the correct pattern and level that is needed today in NEET/AIIMS. They have previous year questions from JEE-Main and Advanced too which help a lot since in past 2 years NEET/AIIMS are coming quite increased in difficulty(as compared to pre-2015 papers) and thus you need that extra edge. Aakash ones(as I have seen) are good at theory but lack questions(very less questions per chapter).Allen ones were not updated(as of 2014-15) with latest pattern of NEET/AIIMS and had old questions from like 1990-2005.So no use.But,they may get updated in future(like this year or next year).So they may become a good choice,although I can't comment much on that.

Auxiliary books - These can be used once you are a semi-pro and need to become a pro.Use when you have time free after doing your coaching/DLP material or when maybe when you are revising your topics.These are question having books which will enhance your range of concepts and make you improve upon them.

• Problems in Physical Chemistry by Narendra Awasthi 

This is one of the finest question books for NEET/AIIMS Physical Chemistry. Narendra Awasthi himself is HOD Physical Chemistry in Vibrant,Kota which is one of the best institute in Kota for JEE.
I myself solved it in last 2 months and the questions were from level 0 to level 100,which helps a lot in both revision and self-assessment.10-15 questions in each chapter were touching AIEEE/JEE level,which NEET/AIIMS are themselves are themselves doing.It contains 2 parts in each chapter basically.Part 1 has author's own questions which are new and better.Part 2 consists of nearly all previous year PMTs and AIIMS questions which may help if your coaching modules/booklets don't contain them.The level of this book is more than sufficient for NEET/AIIMS papers.
Please don't buy JEE editions of these as they have time consuming questions like that of JEE(as my PCM friends told).Stick to NEET/AIIMS editions.

• Problems in Organic Chemistry by MS Chouhan

This is probably the best syllabus accurate,all types of questions covering question single book for NEET/AIIMS. It contains extra chapters on IUPAC Nomenclature,POC and the most important GOC aside form NCERT topics. Since GOC is not given properly in NCERT as well as in coaching sheets of Aakash and some institutes except Resonance(best for GOC) and Allen.But GOC being a fundamental topic is quite important for NEET/AIIMS as many direct questions come from it.It has almost 200-250 questions per chapter which provides a lot of practice of organic chemistry.If you are able to do it without much hassle(except like 10-12 per chapter) you are in good position for acing Organic Chem in both AIIMS and NEET.

Books for Pros - These are recommended only for pros, who are people that have mastered Chemistry of NEET/AIIMS with full syllabus and study material coverage and want something even more to practice.Not recommended for beginners and semi-pros as it will waste their time and confuse them.

• Modern Approach to Chemical Calculations by RC Mukherjee

This is normally recommended for JEE Advanced but when I solved it I didn't feel the questions were"impossible" to do,although they required good command over the subject and better calculation skills.Do it to get the final touch for Physical Chemistry.

"Actually the main thing behind this post is informing students that they should focus on few selected,well recommended books rather than again and again changing them and ending up with a pile of books and no knowledge still.Also don't pay heed to X student or Y Bhaiya and Z Didi for book recommendations unless they have themselves completely studied from that book and are benefiting from it.I have seen many people get "out of course" and quite thick books which they never studied again after few days or weeks of purchasing them.Simply because these didn't help for NEET/AIIMS. 

Please stick to your coaching teacher(not school teacher) and ex-NEET/AIIMS high rankers only for book recommendations.Once you have chosen few books,stick to them for a good period and many coaching tests until you feel that's not helping.Do learn patiently and steadily as only what you have extracted from these books will help you finally,not having these books themselves."
